EMDR

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing

EMDR is a thoroughly researched technique that can help clients heal from the discomfort and negative emotions associated with trauma and PTSD. EMDR can also be used to alleviate phobias, anxiety, low self-esteem, and other persistent negative emotional experiences.

What can I expect in EMDR sessions?

In the initial sessions, we will thoroughly assess your symptoms, history, triggers, and develop a treatment plan specific to your needs. In reprocessing and desensitization sessions, bilateral stimulation is used (this is the “eye movement” part of EMDR, but other options are available such as tapping) while you focus on certain thoughts, sensations, or memories. Bilateral stimulation is repeated through the session so that your body’s natural healing ability can neutralize the negative effects of traumatic or difficult memories.

How long does treatment with EMDR take?

Every client’s experiences and symptoms are unique, and although EMDR is a structured approach, the amount of sessions each client needs will depend on several factors. Studies have supported that EMDR can have a positive impact after just one session. We will discuss your progress and goals throughout the course of your treatment.

Can I do EMDR in virtual sessions?

Yes, EMDR can be just as effective during a telehealth session as it is in person. Clients should plan to use a desktop, rather than phone or tablet, for online EMDR sessions. A strong internet connection and being able to have undistracted, uninterrupted time for the session is essential for a successful telehealth EMDR session.

Where can I learn more?

EMDR has been recommended for treatment of PTSD by The American Psychiatric Association, American Psychological Association, Department of Defense, Veteran’s Administration, and the International Society for Traumatic Stress Studies.
